The City of Chandler is currently seeking qualified individuals to fill the full-time position of TRAFFIC ENGINEERING SPECIALIST in the Development Services Department. This position will work a 9/80's schedule: Mon - Fri 6AM - 4PM (2nd Friday off). Classification Summary: The primary function of an employee in this class is to perform specialized traffic engineering and traffic control duties. Duties include reviewing traffic engineering and traffic control plans, coordinating with other divisions and departments, maintaining engineering records, reviewing and inspecting traffic control barricading, conducting traffic studies, and enforcing federal, state, county and municipal traffic codes and regulations. This class is subject to emergency call-out and must be able to work after hours including nights, weekends, and holidays, as required.
Essential Functions (non-exhaustive):
Performs traffic engineering and traffic control duties, including inspection and enforcement of federal, state, county, and municipal codes and regulations.
Responds to inquiries and concerns from the general public regarding traffic signals, signage, striping, sight visibility, and related traffic engineering issues; explains traffic-related policies, study processes, and results;
Acts as liaison with Police and other departments regarding traffic engineering and temporary traffic control;
Responds to, investigates, and resolves inquiries and complaints from other City departments, contractors, developers, and public, on existing or proposed traffic engineering requirements, including traffic control policy and enforcement.
Attends pre-job meetings on traffic engineering construction projects and discusses requirements for traffic engineering elements or temporary traffic control during construction;
Prepares and maintains records, logs, and related information to document data, analyses, recommendations, reviews, approvals, inspections, enforcement, and compliance;
Provides technical advice and assistance to other City departments, engineers, architects, developers, and contractors to ensure compliance with City policies and guidelines related to traffic engineering and temporary traffic control;
Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with City policies and procedures;
Works in a safe manner and reports unsafe activity and conditions. Follows City-wide safety policy and practices and adheres to responsibilities concerning safety prevention, reporting and monitoring as outlined in the City’s Safety Handbook.
In addition, when assigned to Inspections:
Designs, coordinates and implements traffic barricading plans and specifications for City capital improvement programs, city sponsored and non-sponsored special events; coordinates with the barricade company;
Reviews, approves, denies, or suggests changes to special event, off-site construction, or maintenance operations (requiring road closures or lane restrictions) traffic control plan applications following the City's Traffic Barricading Manual;
Ensures persons and agencies affected by projects are informed and processes established; coordinates
and communicates design development, plan reviews, permitting, changes in design or construction, and
internal or external agency involvement and approval;
Reviews, approves, or make changes to all block party requests;
Responds to and monitors traffic control in emergency situations including weather events, power outages,
water main breaks, etc.;
The City of Chandler will conduct a pre-employment MVRRS (Motor Vehicle Record Request System) check as a condition of employment. An offer of employment is contingent upon acceptable results.
