Sante Fe Streetscape Project (Denver)

Presented By Lisa Edington and Gaby Serrado, City & County of Denver Department of Transportation and Infrastructure

Santa Fe Drive is an important arterial corridor carrying 18,500 ADT within the Denver transportation network. It is a key link between downtown, 6th and 8th Avenues, and I-25, providing connections for a variety of users in the neighborhood and the greater community. The combination of narrow sidewalks and significant vehicular traffic in the district has created a character that does not match the community’s vision for this segment of the corridor.

For the past two and a half years, the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure (DOTI) has worked with the neighborhood and the Business Improvement District (BID) to develop a pilot streetscape project that addresses the safety and comfort of pedestrians. The Santa Fe Streetscape Project has removed one out of the three travel lanes, centered the remaining two lanes, maintained on-street parking on both sides of the street, and delineated the remaining space as a new public space for pedestrians and placemaking.  As a pilot project, the roadway improvements were achieved through paint, flexible delineators, and curb stops. The streetscape improvements included parklets, planters, benches, bicycle parking, and on-street artwork. The new placemaking space seeks to reclaim and redesign the roadway as places for pedestrian use.

While we still want to provide these virtual luncheons as a free option for our members, the executive committee decided to also offer the option to make a charitable donation to the CO/WY ITE Section's Student Scholarship Fund. We suggest a donation of $25 in place of the regular luncheon charge, but please donate what you are able.
