Topic: Safety Improvements for Trail Crossings in Gilbert, Arizona

Overview: Y2K and the Town of Gilbert recently completed a project that evaluated over 45 controlled and uncontrolled arterial trail crossings within Gilbert, Arizona. This project used a systematic approach to review physical conditions present and the observed crash history to evaluate safety at each trail crossing. The purpose of the project was to develop a methodology to evaluate safety and prioritize improvements for programming in the Town’s Capital Improvement Plan. The project resulted in a range of improvement recommendations, ranging from minor maintenance items, modifications to existing traffic control devices, to the development of new pedestrian crossing treatment concepts for uncontrolled crossing locations.
