Nevada Section History
ITE in Nevada the Early Years
One of the first major ITE events held in Nevada was hosting the 1987 Western District Annual meeting in Reno, Nevada. The Local Arrangements Chair was Ralph Phillips. At this time the small number of Nevada ITE members were primarily with governmental agencies and had moved to Nevada bringing with them their ITE membership.
Prior to 1990 Northern Nevada was a subunit of the ITE California Bay Area with Las Vegas a subunit of ITE Southern California. It was not convenient for the Nevada members to attend California meetings. Very few ITE meetings were held in Nevada. When an active ITE member (P. D. Kiser) moved from Salt Lake City to Carson City to work with NDOT, he promoted the transfer of Nevada members to the Intermountain Section because of his past history (Intermountain Section President 1987- Utah) and his desire to attend the annual Section meeting in Jackson, WY. Kurt Weinrich (Clark County Traffic Engineer) lead an effort to organize our Nevada ITE community. As a result of his leadership with P.D. Kiser, James Duddleston (Wallace Engineering), Richard Romer (Clark County Traffic), Ray Burke (City of North Las Vegas) and others, in 1989 by vote of the Nevada ITE members, a request was made of ITE to form a Nevada Chapter as part of the Intermountain Section.
On February 7, 1990 The Intermountain Section Executive Board approved the Nevada Chapter Charter and By-Laws being signed by Section President Tim Harpst. On March 26, 1990. Kurt Weinrich, Director of the Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada received the official Charter documents. Jim Poston was elected as first Nevada representative to the Intermountain Section.
Since the founding of ITE Nevada, Nevada has continued to be recognized over the years on its high percentage of membership growth.
1992
Nevada hosts the well attended 1992 Western District Annual Meeting in Las Vegas at the Rivera Hotel and Casino. The creation of the Western District Local Arrangements Committee (LAC) under the chairmanship of Glenn Grayson (City of Las Vegas) helped to grow membership and further establish ITE in Nevada.
1999
Nevada hosts the 1999 Joint ITE International and Western District Annual meeting in Las Vegas at the Las Vegas Hilton Hotel and Casino. Rich Romer served as the LAC chair with ITE International and organized our Nevada members along with UNLV students to help organize and host the meeting. This meeting is still recognized as one of the largest attended meetings held by ITE International.
2015
Nevada hosts another the well attended Western District Annual Meeting in Las Vegas at the Planet Hollywood Hotel and Casino. The Local Arrangements Committee (LAC) under the chairmanship of Lindsay Saner (Kimley-Horn) helped to re-energize members in both Reno and Las Vegas .
